About everyday tools

These are the tools that get used once and closed. Nobody plans to open a dice roller; they open one because the dice are in the other room. Nobody researches a tally counter; they are halfway through counting something and need to not lose the count. So the priority here is that each one works immediately, without a sign-up, a tour or a cookie wall, and that it does the job properly rather than approximately.

Timers and tracking

The pomodoro timer runs focus blocks and breaks, and keeps correct time in a background tab -- which is where most online timers quietly drift, because they count ticks and the browser throttles them the moment you switch away. The stopwatch and timer covers the simpler case, and the tally counter keeps several named counts at once and remembers them if you close the tab.

Chance, fairly

The dice roller, the coin flip and the random picker all draw from the browser's cryptographic random source with rejection sampling, rather than taking a remainder of a random number. The shortcut is invisible in one roll and measurably biased over many, and these are the tools people use to decide who wins something, so the difference is worth the extra few lines. The picker shuffles with Fisher-Yates for the same reason: sorting a list with a random comparator looks shuffled and is not.

Typing and writing

The typing speed test measures words per minute the standard way -- five characters to a word, mistakes removed -- and marks errors in the passage as you make them. The online notepad saves what you write in your own browser as you type, with nothing uploaded, and the reaction time test measures how fast you respond to something you see.

Birthdays, pets and signs

The dog age calculator and cat age calculator use the size-based tables vets work from rather than the multiply-by-seven rule, which is wrong at both ends. The birthday countdown and half birthday calculator handle the awkward dates properly -- a 29 February birthday, and the six-month step from a 31st that lands on a month that has no 31st. The zodiac sign calculator and Chinese zodiac calculator identify a sign from a date; neither produces a horoscope, because a horoscope is not a calculation.

Frequently asked questions

Do any of these need an account?

No. Nothing on the site does. Open the page and use it.

Does my data get uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser. The notepad, the tally counter and the typing test save to your own browser's storage so your work survives a closed tab, and that storage never leaves your device.

Are the dice and the coin flip genuinely random?

Yes. They use the browser's cryptographic random source with rejection sampling, which means every outcome is exactly equally likely. A real die is marginally less even than that, because its pips are drilled out of one side.

Will the timers keep time if I switch tabs?

Yes. They compare against a stored end time rather than counting ticks, so background throttling does not make them run slow.
