The old "one dog year is seven human years" rule is wrong at both ends. A one-year-old dog is roughly a fifteen-year-old human, and a large dog ages faster after middle age than a small one. This uses the size-based tables vets work from instead.

About the Dog Age Calculator

Dog Age Calculator converts a dog's age into human years using the method vets actually use, which is not the one everybody has heard. The seven-to-one rule is wrong in both directions: it makes a one-year-old dog seven, when a dog of one is physically and socially closer to a teenager, and it treats a chihuahua and a great dane as if they aged at the same rate, which they do not.

The first two years are the same for every dog. A dog reaches roughly the equivalent of fifteen human years by its first birthday and twenty-four by its second, because almost all of its growing happens then. After that, size takes over. A small dog adds about four human years for each of its own; a giant breed adds seven and a half. That is why a ten-year-old great dane is geriatric while a ten-year-old terrier is merely middle-aged.

The life stage matters more than the number. It is the thing that tells you when to change food, when twice-yearly check-ups start being worth it, and when a change in behaviour is worth a vet's attention rather than a shrug. The lifespan range is a typical one for the size and says nothing about any individual dog; breed, weight and care all move it.

The page shows its working, not just its answer. Where there is a formula it is printed with your own numbers substituted in, so you can check the result rather than take it on trust -- which is the difference between a calculator you can use for something that matters and one you cannot.

Everything runs inside your browser. What you type is never uploaded, never logged and never stored, and the calculator keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.

Frequently asked questions

Is one dog year really seven human years?

No. It is a rough average that is wrong at both ends. A one-year-old dog is closer to a fifteen-year-old human, and after that the rate depends on the dog's adult size.

Why does size change the answer?

Larger dogs age faster after they finish growing. A giant breed adds about seven and a half human years for each of its own; a small dog adds about four.

Which size should I pick for a mixed breed?

Use the adult weight rather than the breed. If the dog is still growing, use the weight you expect it to reach.

When is a dog a senior?

Around the equivalent of sixty human years, which is roughly seven for a giant breed, nine for a large one and eleven for a small one.
