A star sign is simply which of twelve date ranges a birthday falls into. The boundary dates shift by a day either way between years because the tropical year is not a whole number of days, so a birthday within a day of a boundary can fall either side.

About the Zodiac Sign Calculator

Zodiac Sign Calculator tells you which of the twelve signs a birth date falls into, along with the sign's element, its symbol and the exact range of dates it covers. The whole thing is a date lookup: the signs divide the year into twelve bands, and a birthday lands in one of them.

The boundary dates are the part worth knowing about. They move by a day either way from year to year, because the tropical year is about 365.24 days rather than a round 365, and the points the signs are measured from drift accordingly. Somebody born on 22 July might be a Cancer in one year and a Leo in another, which is where the idea of being born on the cusp comes from. The figure showing how many days away the next sign is makes it obvious when a date is close enough for that to matter.

This calculator does what it says and no more: it identifies the sign and the element. It does not generate a horoscope or a personality reading, because those are not calculations and inventing one would be dressing up a guess as a result.

The page shows its working, not just its answer. Where there is a formula it is printed with your own numbers substituted in, so you can check the result rather than take it on trust -- which is the difference between a calculator you can use for something that matters and one you cannot.

Everything runs inside your browser. What you type is never uploaded, never logged and never stored, and the calculator keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.

Frequently asked questions

What are the zodiac date ranges?

The table lists all twelve. They run roughly from the 19th to the 23rd of one month to the same point in the next, and shift by a day between years.

What does being on the cusp mean?

A birthday within a day or two of a boundary. Because the boundary moves slightly each year, a date that close can genuinely fall either side.

What are the elements?

The twelve signs are grouped into four sets of three: fire, earth, air and water. The table shows which group each sign belongs to.

Does this give me a horoscope?

No. It identifies the sign for a date. A horoscope is not something that can be calculated, so this does not pretend to produce one.
