About the Chinese Zodiac Calculator

Chinese Zodiac Calculator gives the animal and the element for a birth year. The animal runs on a twelve-year cycle and the element on a ten-year one, and because twelve and ten share a factor of two the pair repeats every sixty years rather than every hundred and twenty. That sixty-year cycle is the traditional unit, which is why a sixtieth birthday carries the weight it does.

The January and February question is the one that catches people out. The Chinese year does not start on 1 January; it starts at the new moon falling between 21 January and 20 February, so the date moves every year. Anybody born in that window belongs to the previous year's animal. Rather than guess, the calculator asks, and shows which animal the other answer would give.

Each year is also yin or yang, alternating strictly: even years are yang, odd years yin. Combined with the five elements, that produces the full name of a year -- 1990 is the year of the metal horse, a yang year -- which is how years are referred to in the traditional calendar.

The page shows its working, not just its answer. Where there is a formula it is printed with your own numbers substituted in, so you can check the result rather than take it on trust -- which is the difference between a calculator you can use for something that matters and one you cannot.

Everything runs inside your browser. What you type is never uploaded, never logged and never stored, and the calculator keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my January birthday give a different animal?

Because the Chinese year starts at a new moon in late January or February. A birthday before that date belongs to the previous year's animal.

What are the five elements?

Wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Each one covers two consecutive years, which is why the full cycle takes sixty years rather than twelve.

What does yin or yang mean here?

It alternates by year: even years are yang, odd years yin. It is part of the formal name of the year rather than something calculated separately.

How often does my exact year come round?

Every sixty years. The animal alone repeats every twelve, but the same animal and element pairing takes a full cycle.
