About encoding & conversion

Encoding is how text survives being put somewhere that would otherwise mangle it: a URL, an HTML attribute, an email header, a JSON string. These tools encode and decode in both directions and, when a decode fails, say which character caused it rather than returning nothing.

Base64

The Base64 encoder and decoder handle text and files, including the URL-safe variant that swaps the problem characters. The image to Base64 converter produces a data URI you can paste into CSS or HTML, which is worth doing for tiny icons and a bad idea for photographs.

URLs and HTML

URL encoding and decoding handle percent escapes, with the distinction between encoding a whole URL and encoding a single query parameter made explicit, since getting that wrong is how query strings break. HTML entity encoding escapes the characters that would otherwise be read as markup.

Other representations

Text to binary, number base conversion and the Morse code translator cover the rest, and the number to words converter spells a figure out for cheques and contracts.

Encoding is not encryption. Base64, URL encoding and HTML entities are reversible by anyone, with no key. They make text safe to transmit; they provide no privacy or security whatsoever.

Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 a form of encryption?

No. It is a reversible representation with no key. Anyone can decode it instantly. Use it to move data safely through text-only channels, never to protect it.

Why did my Base64 string fail to decode?

Usually a missing padding character, a line break inside the string, or the URL-safe variant being decoded as standard Base64. The decoder names which of these it found.

Should I encode the whole URL or just a parameter?

Just the parameter value, almost always. Encoding a whole URL escapes the slashes and colons that make it a URL, which breaks it. The page explains both functions.

How much larger does Base64 make a file?

About 33% larger, because three bytes become four characters. That is why inlining a large image as a data URI is usually a mistake.
