A birthday on 29 February only comes round on leap years. For a non-leap year this counts to 1 March, which is the convention most countries use for legal purposes.

About the Birthday Countdown

Birthday Countdown counts the days, weeks and hours to the next birthday from a date of birth, and tells you which day of the week it lands on. The weekday is usually the part somebody actually wanted: it decides whether the celebration happens on the day or at the weekend either side of it.

The age you turn is worked out from the birthday being counted to, not from today, which matters in the weeks before a birthday when the two differ. The age-now figure is shown beside it so the pair is unambiguous.

A birthday on 29 February is the one awkward case. It only occurs every fourth year, and in the years between, countries differ on whether the legal birthday is 28 February or 1 March. This counts to 1 March, which is the more common convention, and the days-lived figure is unaffected either way because it counts real days rather than anniversaries.

The page shows its working, not just its answer. Where there is a formula it is printed with your own numbers substituted in, so you can check the result rather than take it on trust -- which is the difference between a calculator you can use for something that matters and one you cannot.

Everything runs inside your browser. What you type is never uploaded, never logged and never stored, and the calculator keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.

Frequently asked questions

What happens with a 29 February birthday?

In a non-leap year the countdown goes to 1 March, which is the convention most countries use. In a leap year it counts to the 29th as normal.

Why does it show two different ages?

One is your age today, the other is the age you turn on the birthday being counted to. They differ for every day of the year except the birthday itself.

Does it count today?

No. A birthday today shows as "today" rather than as one day away, and tomorrow shows as one day.

Can I count down to someone else's birthday?

Yes. Enter their date of birth; nothing is stored, and the page works the same way.
