ReaderWords per minuteReading time
Average adult silent reading is around 238 words per minute for non-fiction prose, and reading aloud is far slower at 130 to 150. Technical material, formulas and tables slow everyone down, so treat the figure as a floor rather than a promise.

About the Reading Time Calculator

Reading Time Calculator turns a quantity of text into a length of time, three ways: paste the text and it counts the words, or give it a word count, or give it a number of pages. It then reports silent reading time and reading-aloud time separately, because they are not close to each other.

The default speeds come from the research consensus. Adult silent reading of non-fiction prose averages around 238 words per minute; fiction runs a little faster, technical material a lot slower. Reading aloud is limited by speech rather than comprehension and sits at 130 to 150 words per minute, which is why a 2,000-word speech runs about fourteen minutes however fast you can read it to yourself.

The comparison table is there because a single number hides the spread. The same chapter takes a slow reader more than twice as long as a skimmer, and if you are setting homework, planning a lecture or estimating a reading list you usually want the slow end rather than the average. The sittings figure converts the total into how many study sessions it will actually occupy.

The page shows its working, not just its answer. Where there is a formula it is printed with your own numbers substituted in, so you can check the result rather than take it on trust -- which is the difference between a calculator you can use for something that matters and one you cannot.

Everything runs inside your browser. What you type is never uploaded, never logged and never stored, and the calculator keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.

Frequently asked questions

What reading speed should I use?

238 words per minute is the research average for adult silent reading of non-fiction. Lower it for technical material and for younger readers.

Why is speaking time so much longer?

Because speech is limited by the mouth, not the eye. Comfortable presenting is 130 to 150 words per minute, roughly 60% of silent reading speed.

How many words are on a page?

About 250 to 350 for a typical printed book, which is why 300 is the default. Double-spaced manuscript pages hold around 250.

Does the word count include numbers and headings?

Yes. Anything containing a letter or a digit counts as a word, which matches how word processors count.
