A ROAS of 4 sounds healthy and loses money at a 20% margin. The break-even figure is one divided by your margin, and it is the number to judge a campaign against.

About the ROAS Calculator

ROAS Calculator works out return on ad spend as both a ratio and a percentage, then does the part that most reporting leaves out: it compares the figure against the ROAS your margin actually requires.

Break-even ROAS is one divided by the gross margin. At a 45 per cent margin it is 2.22, so a ROAS of 4.8 is comfortably profitable. At a 20 per cent margin break-even is 5.0, and the same 4.8 is a loss. This is why ROAS targets copied from somebody else's case study are close to meaningless: the number that matters depends on your margin, not theirs.

Other campaign costs are a separate field because they are routinely excluded from ROAS and routinely large. Agency fees, creative production and tooling are real costs of the campaign, and a ROAS calculated on media spend alone can look fine while the campaign as a whole loses money. The profit figure here includes them.

This is arithmetic, not financial advice. It tells you what the numbers do; it cannot tell you whether a decision is right for your circumstances. Fees, taxes and local rules vary, so check anything that matters against the actual offer and speak to someone qualified before committing.

Everything is worked out inside your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded, logged or stored, which matters for the financial calculators in particular: the figures you put into them are nobody else's business.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good ROAS?

Anything above your break-even, which is one divided by your gross margin. There is no universal number: a 2x ROAS is excellent at a 70% margin and ruinous at 20%.

Is ROAS the same as ROI?

No. ROAS compares revenue with spend; ROI compares profit with total cost. A campaign can have a strong ROAS and a negative ROI.

Should I include agency fees?

Yes, if you want to know whether the campaign made money. Put them in other costs; they are excluded from the ROAS ratio by convention but included in the profit.
