About the Steps to Calories Calculator

Steps to Calories Calculator turns a step count into the energy used and the distance covered. Both depend on more than the number of steps: a tall person covers more ground per step, a heavier person uses more energy to move the same distance, and a brisk pace uses more per minute than a stroll.

Stride length is estimated from height, at about 0.415 of it for a normal walking pace. That is the standard figure and it shifts with pace -- people take shorter steps strolling and longer ones striding out -- so the calculator adjusts it by the pace selected. Ten thousand steps works out near seven kilometres for somebody of average height, which is where the familiar target comes from.

The energy figure uses MET values from the Compendium of Physical Activities, the same source most fitness equipment uses. It is the energy spent walking, not your total daily burn, which includes everything your body does at rest. Treat it as an estimate within about fifteen per cent: trackers disagree with each other and with laboratory measurement by at least that much.

This is general information and not medical advice. The formula cannot know your medical history, your medication, your body composition or anything else specific to you. Speak to a doctor or another qualified professional about any question concerning your health, and never delay seeking advice because of a figure on this page.

Your measurements are processed inside your own browser. Height, weight, age and anything else you enter never leave your device, nothing is logged, and nothing survives closing the tab.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories is 10,000 steps?

Roughly 300 to 400 kcal for an average adult at a normal pace, but it varies a lot with weight and pace. Enter your own figures for a closer estimate.

How far is 10,000 steps?

About 7 km for somebody of average height at a normal pace. Stride length depends on height, so the calculator estimates it from yours.

Why does my tracker say something different?

Trackers use their own stride and energy models, and they differ from each other by more than ten per cent. Neither figure is exact.

Does walking faster burn more?

Per minute, yes, substantially. Per step the difference is smaller, because a faster pace also covers more ground with each step.
