Waking at the end of a cycle rather than in the middle of one is why a six-hour night can feel better than a seven-hour one. The ninety-minute figure is an average: real cycles run from about seventy to a hundred and twenty minutes and change through the night, so treat these times as targets rather than precision.

About the Sleep Calculator

Sleep Calculator works backwards from the time you have to be up, or forwards from the time you are going to bed, and lands the alarm at the end of a sleep cycle rather than in the middle of one. Waking mid-cycle, particularly out of deep sleep, is what produces the grogginess that can make a longer night feel worse than a shorter one.

A cycle averages about ninety minutes, moving through light sleep, deep sleep and REM before returning to light sleep. Waking at the top of that loop is easy; waking at the bottom of it is not. The calculator adds the time it takes you to fall asleep before counting cycles, because a bedtime that ignores that is out by a quarter of an hour before the night starts. Fourteen minutes is the adult average; use your own figure if you know it.

Both inputs are averages and neither is precise. Real cycles run from roughly seventy to a hundred and twenty minutes, lengthen through the night, and differ between people and between nights. Treat the times as targets. If you regularly take more than half an hour to fall asleep, or wake unrefreshed after seven to nine hours in bed, that is worth raising with a doctor rather than solving with arithmetic.

This is general information and not medical advice. The formula cannot know your medical history, your medication, your body composition or anything else specific to you. Speak to a doctor or another qualified professional about any question concerning your health, and never delay seeking advice because of a figure on this page.

Your measurements are processed inside your own browser. Height, weight, age and anything else you enter never leave your device, nothing is logged, and nothing survives closing the tab.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a sleep cycle?

About ninety minutes on average, though real cycles run from roughly seventy to a hundred and twenty and get longer through the night.

Why count cycles instead of hours?

Because waking at the end of a cycle is much easier than waking in the middle of deep sleep. It is why six hours can sometimes feel better than seven.

How much sleep do I actually need?

Seven to nine hours for most adults. The table marks which options fall inside that range and which are short.

Is this medical advice?

No. It is arithmetic on averages. Persistent trouble falling asleep or waking unrefreshed after a full night is worth discussing with a doctor.
