About the Overtime Calculator

Overtime Calculator works out gross pay when some of the hours are paid at a premium. Hours up to the threshold are paid at the normal rate, the rest at the multiplier, and a separate double time band handles the Sundays and holidays that many contracts treat differently again.

The effective hourly rate is the figure worth knowing. Seven hours of time and a half on top of a forty-hour week at 18 an hour produces 909, which is an average of 19.34 across all 47 hours rather than 27. Overtime feels like it pays much more than it does precisely because people compare the premium rate rather than the blended one.

This is gross pay. Income tax, national insurance and other deductions depend on the country, the tax year and the individual, and a guessed deduction would be worse than none at all. Overtime rules differ too: the threshold, the multiplier and whether overtime is mandatory at all are set by law and contract, so they are inputs here rather than assumptions.

This is arithmetic, not financial advice. It tells you what the numbers do; it cannot tell you whether a decision is right for your circumstances. Fees, taxes and local rules vary, so check anything that matters against the actual offer and speak to someone qualified before committing.

Everything is worked out inside your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded, logged or stored, which matters for the financial calculators in particular: the figures you put into them are nobody else's business.

What is time and a half?

An overtime multiplier of 1.5, so an 18 an hour rate becomes 27 for overtime hours. Double time is a multiplier of 2.

Does this include tax?

No. It is gross pay. Deductions depend on your country, your tax code and your total income, so nothing is assumed.

How do I do a monthly figure?

Set the weeks field to the number of weeks in the period, usually 4 or 4.33 for a month, and enter a typical week's hours.
