Shoe Size Converter moves a size between the UK, US and European systems, and gives the foot length in centimetres that goes with it. Separate charts are used for men, women and children, because the three scales are offset from each other: a UK 8 in men's is not a UK 8 in women's, and the US scale differs from the UK one by one size for men and roughly two and a half for women.
The centimetre figure is the one worth paying attention to. UK and US sizes derive from the barleycorn, a third of an inch, which is why they go up in halves and why the steps are so coarse. European sizes use the Paris point, two thirds of a centimetre, which gives a slightly finer scale that does not line up neatly with the other two. Foot length in centimetres is the only measurement that means the same thing in every country.
None of it is standardised. Two pairs marked the same size from different brands can differ by a full size, sports shoes typically run smaller than formal ones, and the same brand can be inconsistent between models. Treat the chart as a starting point: measure your foot, stand up while you do it, measure late in the day when feet are at their largest, and buy to the longer foot if the two differ.
The page shows its working, not just its answer. Where there is a formula it is printed with your own numbers substituted in, so you can check the result rather than take it on trust -- which is the difference between a calculator you can use for something that matters and one you cannot.
Everything runs inside your browser. What you type is never uploaded, never logged and never stored, and the calculator keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.
The shoe size converter is used by writers, developers, students, marketers and anyone else who needs the job done once without installing software. Common cases include:
For men's shoes, a US 8.5. For women's the offset is different, which is why the chart is split by who the shoes are for.
Stand on a sheet of paper, mark the back of the heel and the longest toe, and measure between them. Do it late in the day, and use the longer foot.
Because nothing requires them to agree. Each brand uses its own lasts, so a full size of variation between brands is normal.
Broadly, yes. The EU scale uses the Paris point and is more consistent than the UK and US scales, though individual brands still vary.
