Several conventions exist for interpolating a percentile from a finite sample, and they disagree on small data sets. This uses linear interpolation between the closest ranks, which is what spreadsheets call PERCENTILE.INC.

About the Percentile Calculator

Percentile Calculator works in both directions: give it a percentile and it returns the value at that position, or give it a value and it returns the percentile rank that value occupies. It also reports the quartiles and the interquartile range, which together make up most of a five-number summary.

The method matters on small data sets, so it is stated rather than hidden. Percentiles are computed by linear interpolation between the two closest ranks -- the convention spreadsheets implement as PERCENTILE.INC. Other conventions exist, including nearest-rank and exclusive interpolation, and they can give noticeably different answers with only a handful of values. With a few hundred the differences vanish.

The interquartile range is the spread measure worth knowing alongside the standard deviation. It covers the middle half of the data and ignores the extremes entirely, which makes it robust: a single wild value changes the standard deviation substantially and the interquartile range hardly at all.

The page shows its working, not just its answer. Where there is a formula it is printed with your own numbers substituted in, so you can check the result rather than take it on trust -- which is the difference between a calculator you can use for something that matters and one you cannot.

Everything runs inside your browser. What you type is never uploaded, never logged and never stored, and the calculator keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.

How to use the Percentile Calculator

  1. Enter percentile wanted, percentile rank of this value and your numbersDecimals are fine, and thousands separators are accepted and ignored.
  2. Read the value at that percentile, rank of your value and q1 (25th)The figures update as you type. The Calculate button is there if you would rather press something, but nothing waits for it.
  3. Copy or check the resultCopy the summary with the copy button, or open the table to check it row by row and read the formula with your own numbers in it.

Features

  • Shows value at that percentile, rank of your value, q1 (25th), q3 (75th) and interquartile range together, so you are not running it twice
  • A results table you can read across
  • Prints the formula with your own figures substituted in
  • Updates as you type, with no button to press and no page reload
  • Copy the result in one click
  • Free, no sign-up, and it runs entirely in your browser

Who uses this tool

The percentile calculator is used by writers, developers, students, marketers and anyone else who needs the job done once without installing software. Common cases include:

  • Finding the 90th percentile of response times
  • Working out which percentile a test score falls in
  • Getting quartiles and the IQR for a box plot
  • Identifying outliers using the interquartile range

Frequently asked questions

Which percentile method is used?

Linear interpolation between the closest ranks, the same as PERCENTILE.INC in a spreadsheet. The page says so because other methods give different answers on small samples.

What is the interquartile range for?

It measures the spread of the middle half of the data, ignoring the tails. It is the usual basis for outlier rules and for the box in a box plot.

Is the 50th percentile the median?

Yes, always. They are two names for the same value.
