Liquid net worth excludes property and vehicles: it is what you could reach without selling where you live or what you drive. It is usually the more useful of the two figures for working out how exposed you are.

About the Net Worth Calculator

Net Worth Calculator adds up what you own, subtracts what you owe, and shows the composition of both. It is the single most useful personal finance number there is, and the one people track least, because income is visible every month and net worth only changes slowly.

The composition matters as much as the total. A net worth that is almost entirely the equity in a house is a different position from the same figure held in savings and investments, because the first cannot be spent without moving. That is why the liquid figure is shown separately: it excludes property and vehicles and answers the question of what you could actually reach.

Debt as a share of assets is the stress measure. Below about a third is comfortable for most households; above a half leaves little room for a fall in asset values or a rise in rates. The ratio is more informative than the absolute debt, because a large mortgage against a large asset is a different thing from the same debt against nothing.

This is arithmetic, not financial advice. It tells you what the numbers do; it cannot tell you whether a decision is right for your circumstances. Fees, taxes and local rules vary, so check anything that matters against the actual offer and speak to someone qualified before committing.

Everything is worked out inside your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded, logged or stored, which matters for the financial calculators in particular: the figures you put into them are nobody else's business.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include my pension?

Yes, at its current transfer or fund value. It is an asset you own even if you cannot access it yet, though it belongs in the illiquid part of the picture.

How should I value my house?

At what it would realistically sell for, not what you hope. If you are being conservative, subtract selling costs too.

Is a negative net worth a disaster?

Not necessarily. A recent graduate with student debt and a new mortgage holder are both often negative on paper. The trend over several years says more than the level.
