About the Future Value Calculator

Future Value Calculator works out what money becomes: a lump sum left to grow, a regular contribution paid in, or the two together. It is the arithmetic behind every savings projection, and separating what you paid in from what growth added is the part worth looking at, because over long periods the second overtakes the first.

Contribution timing is handled because it matters more than it looks. Paying at the start of each period rather than the end gives every contribution one extra period of growth, which over thirty years is a difference worth having. The checkbox switches between the two conventions, called an annuity due and an ordinary annuity.

The real-value readout is the one to pay attention to on any projection longer than about ten years. A million in forty years is not a million: at three per cent inflation it buys roughly what 300,000 buys now. Entering an inflation rate shows the result in today's money, which is the only version that means anything you can picture.

This is arithmetic, not financial advice. It tells you what the numbers do; it cannot tell you whether a decision is right for your circumstances. Fees, taxes and local rules vary, so check anything that matters against the actual offer and speak to someone qualified before committing.

Everything is worked out inside your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded, logged or stored, which matters for the financial calculators in particular: the figures you put into them are nobody else's business.

Frequently asked questions

What rate of return should I use?

Something you can justify over the whole period, not last year's. Projections are very sensitive to it, so it is worth running a pessimistic figure as well as a hopeful one.

Start or end of period?

End is the usual convention and the default. Choose start if you pay in on the first of the month, which earns one extra period of growth on every contribution.

Does it account for tax or charges?

No. Reduce the rate of return by the annual charge to approximate them. Tax depends on the account and the country and is not guessed at here.
