About the Volume Calculator

Volume Calculator handles the seven solids that cover almost every practical case, including the capsule shape used for round-ended tanks. Each result is given in cubic units, cubic metres, litres and both kinds of gallon, because a volume is usually calculated in order to fill something.

The cubic metre to litre conversion is the one worth committing to memory, and the one most often got wrong by a factor of a thousand: one cubic metre is exactly a thousand litres. A tank measured as 0.6 cubic metres holds 600 litres, not 6 or 60.

Surface area is given alongside the volume because the two are usually needed together -- volume to know what fits inside, surface area to know how much material or paint covers the outside. They scale differently as a shape grows, which is why doubling a tank's dimensions multiplies its capacity by eight but its surface only by four.

The page shows its working, not just its answer. Where there is a formula it is printed with your own numbers substituted in, so you can check the result rather than take it on trust -- which is the difference between a calculator you can use for something that matters and one you cannot.

Everything runs inside your browser. What you type is never uploaded, never logged and never stored, and the calculator keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.

Looking for something this does not cover? FreeToolStation.com is a second collection of the same kind of everyday tools, and it is worth a look if volume calculator is only part of what you are working on.

How to use the Volume Calculator

  1. Choose shape and measurements inThe fields below change to match what you pick, so only the figures that matter to your case are asked for.
  2. Enter a, b and cDecimals are fine, and thousands separators are accepted and ignored.
  3. Read the volume, in litres and in cubic metresThe figures update as you type. The Calculate button is there if you would rather press something, but nothing waits for it.
  4. Copy or check the resultCopy the summary with the copy button, or open the table to check it row by row and read the formula with your own numbers in it.

Features

  • Shows volume, in litres, in cubic metres, in us gallons and surface area together, so you are not running it twice
  • A results table you can read across
  • Prints the formula with your own figures substituted in
  • Updates as you type, with no button to press and no page reload
  • Copy the result in one click
  • Free, no sign-up, and it runs entirely in your browser

Who uses this tool

The volume calculator is used by writers, developers, students, marketers and anyone else who needs the job done once without installing software. Common cases include:

  • Working out a water tank's capacity in litres
  • Finding the volume of a room for ventilation or heating
  • Calculating concrete or soil needed to fill a space
  • Converting a volume into gallons for an imported spec

Frequently asked questions

How many litres in a cubic metre?

Exactly 1,000. A cubic centimetre is one millilitre, which is where the relationship comes from.

Which gallon is used?

Both. The US gallon is 3.785 litres and the imperial gallon 4.546, so the two differ by about twenty per cent and the table gives each.

What shape is a capsule?

A cylinder with a hemisphere on each end, which is the usual shape of a pressure vessel or a propane tank. Enter the radius and the length of the straight section only.
