About the Profit Calculator

Profit Calculator produces the three profit figures a business actually reports, in the order they appear on an income statement: gross profit after the cost of goods, operating profit after overheads, and net profit after interest and tax. Each is shown as a margin on revenue as well as a cash amount.

The three tell you different things. Gross margin is about pricing and production: if it is thin, no amount of cost control downstream will save the business. Operating margin is about how efficiently the business runs. Net margin is what is actually left, and it is the only one that pays anybody.

The margin column is where the diagnosis lives. A business with a healthy gross margin and a poor net margin has an overhead problem; one with a poor gross margin has a pricing or sourcing problem, and cutting overheads will not fix it. Seeing all the lines as percentages of revenue makes the difference obvious.

This is arithmetic, not financial advice. It tells you what the numbers do; it cannot tell you whether a decision is right for your circumstances. Fees, taxes and local rules vary, so check anything that matters against the actual offer and speak to someone qualified before committing.

Everything is worked out inside your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded, logged or stored, which matters for the financial calculators in particular: the figures you put into them are nobody else's business.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gross and net profit?

Gross profit subtracts only the cost of what you sold. Net profit subtracts everything else as well: overheads, interest and tax.

What belongs in cost of goods sold?

Costs that vary directly with each sale: materials, manufacturing, wholesale purchase cost, payment fees. Rent and salaries are overheads, not cost of goods.

Is tax applied to a loss?

No. If profit before tax is negative, no tax is charged here. Loss relief and carry-forward rules vary by country and are not modelled.
