A repeating decimal is exact as a fraction but never as a decimal: 0.333... is one third precisely, while 0.333 is not. Set the repeating digits box to 1 for 0.3 recurring and the answer comes out exact.

About the Decimal to Fraction Calculator

Decimal to Fraction Calculator converts a decimal into an exact fraction, then reduces it to lowest terms and shows it as a mixed number. The method is the one taught in school: the digits after the point become the numerator, a power of ten becomes the denominator, and the greatest common divisor cancels the fraction down. 0.375 is 375/1000, and dividing both by 125 gives 3/8.

Repeating decimals need the other method, and the repeating digits box switches to it. For a decimal where the last few digits go on forever, you subtract the non-repeating part from the whole and divide by a difference of two powers of ten. That is why 0.3 recurring comes out as exactly one third rather than 3/10, and why 0.142857 recurring is 1/7.

The check row converts the fraction back to a decimal so you can see the conversion was exact. For a terminating decimal it matches to the last digit. For a repeating one it cannot, because the decimal form of a third never ends -- and that is the whole reason to prefer the fraction.

The page shows its working, not just its answer. Where there is a formula it is printed with your own numbers substituted in, so you can check the result rather than take it on trust -- which is the difference between a calculator you can use for something that matters and one you cannot.

Everything runs inside your browser. What you type is never uploaded, never logged and never stored, and the calculator keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.

How to use the Decimal to Fraction Calculator

  1. Enter decimal and repeating digits at the endDecimals are fine, and thousands separators are accepted and ignored.
  2. Read the as a fraction, as a mixed number and lowest termsThe figures update as you type. The Calculate button is there if you would rather press something, but nothing waits for it.
  3. Copy or check the resultCopy the summary with the copy button, or open the table to check it row by row and read the formula with your own numbers in it.

Features

  • Shows as a fraction, as a mixed number, lowest terms, divided by and back to decimal together, so you are not running it twice
  • A results table you can read across
  • Prints the formula with your own figures substituted in
  • Updates as you type, with no button to press and no page reload

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a repeating decimal?

Type the digits you have and set the repeating digits box to how many of the final digits recur. Entering 0.3 with 1 repeating digit gives exactly 1/3.

Why does my answer have a huge denominator?

A long decimal that is not recurring genuinely needs a large denominator: 0.123456 is 15432/125000 in lowest terms. Round the decimal first if you want a simpler fraction.

What is a mixed number?

A whole number with a proper fraction beside it. 5/2 is 2 1/2 as a mixed number -- the same value written so the whole part is obvious.

Can it handle negative decimals?

Yes. The sign is carried through to the fraction and the mixed number, and the fraction itself is reduced the same way.
